WPL 2024 Set To Be Held In February, Confirms Arun Dhumal

The chairman of the IPL Governing Council Arun Dhumal has confirmed that the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be held in February 2024. He also revealed that the BCCI has not yet made any decision on the venues for the competition.

The first edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which is a league owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was held in 2023 and the Mumbai Indians won the inaugural season by defeating Delhi Capitals in the final.

The WPL 2023 was entirely held in Mumbai and some reports suggest that Bengaluru will host the second edition of the competition alongside Mumbai.

Speaking to Sportstar, Arun Dhumal said that the officials will meet during the upcoming Women’s Premier League auction and will make a decision on the venues.

“The WPL will be in February, so we will be checking on the venues. Once we meet, most probably during the WPL auctions, we will figure out where it makes more sense to host the tournament, given the logistical challenges and the time available. We will take a call on that,” Dhumal said.

If it is possible to host WPL in a multi-city format, that… – Arun Dhumal

Arun Dhumal further said that the WPL 2024 being hosted in a multi-city format will be good for the fans.

“If it is possible to host it in a multi-city format, that would be better for the fans and the franchises, since there is a fan base. But it all depends on how much time is available and the logistical challenges,” he said.

The chairman of the IPL Governing Council added that they will discuss the matter of the WPL venues with all the franchises before making the final decision.

“Definitely, we would want the tournament to go through the geography of the entire country, given the diversity of our country. It’s a great opportunity for all the franchises to engage with the fans through the length and breadth of this country. There are many stadiums and would be phenomenal for fans to engage with women cricketers. Now that the franchises are clear, even they would be keen on having their games in their local centres,” Dhumal said.

“We will work with the franchises and see to what extent it is possible to organise matches there…”

The Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 auction is all set to be held on December 9 in Mumbai. A total of 165 cricketers will take part in the auction out of which 104 are Indians and 61 are overseas cricketers, among which 15 are from Associate Nations.
