Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott is impressed with his side’s performance in this World Cup. The side won four of the nine games played in the tournament beating teams like England, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

They also had South Africa under pressure in their last league game before Rassie Ven der Dussen anchored his team to victory with an innings on unbeaten 76 chasing 245 to win.

Afghanistan had just one World Cup win across two editions of the World Cup leading into this World Cup. They lost all of their games in the last edition of the World Cup. In this World Cup, they won four games and certainly made a big impact in this tournament.

Trott lauded the players of his team congratulating them on a memorable campaign in the post-match press conference after their loss to South Africa.

“You know, a real good bunch of guys. I think they’re very proud, very, very proud of representing their side. And I enjoy that, I like that, when you’re proud of who you are and what you’re sort of representing with regards to the challenges to be able to become a cricket player and perhaps personal challenges in the past and able to put that to a side and for a common goal,” Trott said at the post-match press conference.

He further said that Afghanistan beating Pakistan for the first time in ODI cricket was the most memorable moment of their wonderful campaign. The Afghans came close to beating Pakistan in the Asia Cup earlier this year but then the dream became reality in this World Cup.

“There have been times, there’s been tough testing times for sure, but these four wins in this World Cup, the joy on their face beating Pakistan for the first time, that makes everything worthwhile. So that’s really a moment I won’t forget along with a lot of the other guys as well,” he further added.

Afghanistan further enhanced its reputation after qualifying for the Champions Trophy 2025. Afghanistan’s qualification in the Champions Trophy was confirmed after Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2023 on November 6, Monday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Afghanistan ended their campaign finishing sixth on the points table. England who are currently placed seventh will get to six points even if they beat Pakistan and possibly ensure their qualification as well.
