Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has named his favourite batting partner from international cricket. One of India’s most decorated openers of all time, Gautam Gambhir represented the country in all the three formats. He played for India from 2004 to 2016.
At the peak of his career, he was an indispensable part of the Indian team in all the three formats. Gautam Gambhir played a key role in India’s triumph at the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 World Cup. The former opener was the top-scorer in the final of both the World Cups. He was also named as the ICC Test Player of the Year for 2009 and reached the number one spot in the ICC rankings.
Gautam Gambhir forged a strong opening partnership with Virender Sehwag. The duo opened the innings for Team India across formats and were one of the key reasons behind India’s impressive display in all the formats during the second half of the 2000s.
Gautam Gambhir’s favourite batting partner:
Despite enjoying an impressive opening partnership with Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir has named a different player as his favourite batting partner. He has picked former India captain MS Dhoni as his favourite batting partner. In an interview with Sportskeeda, he said:
“My favourite batting partner was MS Dhoni. People think that it was Virender Sehwag but I actually love playing more with Dhoni especially in white-ball cricket. We shared big partnerships.”
One of the best partnerships of Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni came in the 2011 World Cup final when India were in a spot of bother while chasing 275 against Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue were reeling at 114 for 3 before the duo shared a 109-run stand to put the team in the driver’s seat. Gautam Gambhir had scored 97 runs in that match while Dhoni scored an unbeaten 91 and was adjudged the Man of the Match.
