Australia beat England by 33 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in their World Cup 2023 round-robin stage face-off on Saturday (November 4). The Kangaroos’ victory over their arch-rivals means that the defending champions have now been officially ruled out of the race to the semifinals, succumbing to their sixth defeat in seven matches.

England won the toss and opted to field first and would have though they are in with a real chance once they bowled Australia out for 286 in 49.3 overs with Chris Woakes ending as the leading of their bowling attack with figures of 4 for 54. Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, David Willey and Liam Livingston were the other wicket-takers for the Three Lions. 

Adam Zampa With An All-Round Performance

For Australia, Marnus Labuschagne ended up as the leading run-scorer, scoring 71 off 83. Steven Smith’s 44 off 52, Cameron Green’s 47 off 52, Marcus Stoinis’ 35 off 32 and Adam Zampa’s 29 off 19 were healthy contributions. Zampa then retuned to emerge as the leading wicket-taker in the bowling performance, finishing with 3 for 21 in his 10 overs and bagging the Player of the Match award.

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc shared two wickets apiece while Marcus Stoinis picked a wicket to wrap up the England innings. For England, Dawid Malan (50) and Ben Stokes (64) scored half-centuries and while their lower order the likes of Moeen Ali (42), Chris Woakes (32), David Willey (15) and Adil Rashid (20) did come close and give the Aussies a bit of a scare but in the end it was the Men in Yellow who came out on top.

Australia’s win means they now move to 10 points from 7 matches and strengthen their position in the top four. India and South Africa are the only two teams to have guaranteed themselevs a place in the knockout round of the tournament so far with 14 and 12 points respectively while two slots are still open for which six teams are mathematically alive to qualify.
