World Cup Final: Would’ve loved to have Rahul Dravid hold the World Cup trophy, says Anil Kumble

Former India captain Anil Kumble has said that he would have loved to see head coach Rahul Dravid lift the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 title. Australia beat India by 6 wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to win their 6th ODI World Cup title.

WORLD CUP 2023 FINAL: Scorecard

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Kumble said he would have loved to have Dravid hold the World Cup trophy. Dravid lost the ODI World Cup final against Australia in 2003 as a player and in 2023 as a coach.

“I would have loved to have him hold the World Cup trophy. He has worked really hard, and it’s not been easy. It’s not easy being an India coach. You’re on the road all the time, and the focus is on you. I don’t know yet (if he will continue as the head coach). It all depends on how he wakes up tomorrow morning and then decides,” said Kumble.

He went on to say that it’s sad that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli couldn’t hold the ODI World Cup trophy. Kohli won the Player of the Tournament award for scoring the most runs in the 2023 World Cup, while Rohit became the first player to score 500-plus runs in successive ODI World Cups.

“It is sad that the two of them (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) couldn’t hold the trophy at the end. Those two players certainly stood up for India in every moment. It was Rohit giving India the start, and then Virat ensuring that India got the score that they eventually reached,” Kumble added.

India came into their fourth ODI World Cup final, aiming to get revenge for their loss in the 2003 final. However, it wasn’t meant to be as Men in Blue failed to stop the Australian juggernaut in Ahmedabad.

With this win, Australia lifted their record-extending sixth ODI World Cup trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
