Former India batter Aakash Chopra said that pacer Mohammed Siraj got marginalized in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final. Australia beat India by 6 wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to lift their 6th ODI World Cup title.

Speaking on his Youtube channel, Chopra said India went with Mohammed Shami over Siraj with the new ball since they did not have many runs on the board. Shami bowled with the new ball alongside Jasprit Bumrah in the final despite Siraj bowling the new ball-overs throughout the tournament.

“We started well with the ball but were slightly wayward because we were going left-right too much. We were thinking about picking up wickets quickly because we didn’t have runs on the board. We went with Shami instead of Siraj because we didn’t have runs on the board,” said Chopra.

He went on to say that Siraj got marginalized, adding that he did not get a chance to pick wickets with the new ball. Siraj picked 14 wickets in 11 matches in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

“When we did that, Shami did pick up a wicket, but Siraj got marginalized. He didn’t get a chance at all. His game was almost over because you couldn’t bring him in,” Chopra added.

India had a chance to win their third ODI World Cup title in their fourth final in the history of the competition. However, it wasn’t meant to be as Australia beat India in Ahmedabad to lift their ODI World Cup for a record-extending sixth time.

Virat Kohli and KL Rahul scored half-centuries, while skipper Rohit Sharma chipped in with 31-ball 47 to guide India to 240 runs in the first innings.

In the second innings, India’s pacers gave the hosts a glimmer of hope in the powerplay, dismissing David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith early on.

However, Head broke India’s back with a magnificent century as he formed a match-winning partnership with Marnus Labuschagne. The two batters put up 192 runs for the fourth wicket to steer Australia to a famous win in Ahmedabad.
