World Cup 2023: Matthew Mott should not be replaced as England coach, says Michael Vaughan

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan does not want England white-ball coach Matthew Mott to get sacked after the World Cup 2023. Under Mott, England have had a disastrous tournament, despite coming in as the defending champions. England have won just 2 out of their 8 matches so far and are struggling to qualify for the Champions Trophy.

Several former England cricketers are worried about Mott’s position as the coach of the England side, but Vaughan has backed Mott to remain in charge till T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to be hosted in the United States of America and West Indies.

“I’m not one for swapping and changing a coach that won a T20 World Cup a year ago. Matthew Mott will know he’s made mistakes in the last few weeks. In my eyes, he will be the coach going to the T20 World Cup in America and the Caribbean in about six months time and that is the right thing,” Vaughan said on BBC.

Earlier ahead of England’s match against the Netherlands, Eoin Morgan had said something similar. Morgan, while speaking to Sky Sports had said that Jos Buttler and Mott’s relationship is still developing and they both deserve to have time till the 2024 T20 World Cup to settle into their roles. Morgan, however, had not given credit to Mott for winning the T20 World Cup 2022 and had said that the existing England set-up had helped the side clinch the 2022 victory.

“They’ll have done a huge amount of talking throughout this tournament. The longest meetings are always after the biggest defeats,” Morgan said on Sky Sports after England’s win against the Netherlands.

“But results, chipping away with little performances like this, do make a difference. They allow sides to take some time, breath, relax and go ‘this is what we do well, let’s stick with the same plan’,” he further added.

England jumped to the 7th position in the World Cup 2023 table after their win against the Netherlands, but have to win their last group stage match against Pakistan to remain alive for the Champions Trophy qualification.
