World Cup 2023 has a new record: Most sixes hit in a single edition of the tournament

World Cup 2023 set a record for most sixes hit in a single edition of the tournament after the 464th maximum was hit in Sri Lanka’s group stage match against Bangladesh in New Delhi on 6 November 2023.

Kusal Mendis’ six off Tanzim Hasan in the 11th over of the match set the record for World Cup 2023, overtaking World Cup 2015’s tally. 8 years back, the World Cup hosted in Australia had broken the earlier record by a big distance, overtaking 2007’s record of 373 sixes.

Big hitters from the South African and Indian teams have been in full flow during the tournament. South Africa batters have already broken the record for most sixes hit by a team in a single edition of the tournament, overtaking England’s record of 76 sixes from 2019.

From the Indian team, captain Rohit Sharma has hit 22 sixes in the tournament already. Barring Rohit Sharma, star India batter Virat Kohli has hit 6 sixes and Shreyas Iyer has hit 11 sixes in the tournament already.

In terms of standings in the group table, India and South Africa have already qualified for the semi-final of the tournament and there is a four-way battle between Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Afghanistan for the final two spots remaining.

Australia hold the advantage at the moment, having played one less game than the rest of the sides. The Pat Cummins side will face Afghanistan and Bangladesh in their final two group-stage games in Mumbai and Pune respectively.
