WATCH | Nicholas Pooran equals Yuvraj Singh’s record, hits Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai for 36 runs in an over

West Indies opener Nicholas Pooran made history when he scored 36 runs against Azmatullah Omarzai in the T20 World Cup match between Afghanistan and West Indies on Tuesday. Notably, this is only the fifth time in history that 36 runs have been scored in an over in a T20 international.
However, unlike Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard, who reached the milestones by hitting 6 sixes, Pooran scored 26 runs with the bat, while getting 5 wides, 4 leg byes and a no-ball in the over.
The over began with the Caribbean batsman getting lucky as he drove one over third man for a six. Pooran looked to be in complete control with the second delivery of the over as he went on the back foot to smash the ball for a boundary. Things got even worse for Omarzai when the delivery was called a no ball and the very next ball, which was declared wide, went over the keeper’s head for a four.
In the last four balls of the over, Pooran hit Omarzai for a boundary and two sixes, while another delivery that was adjudged to be leg by went to the boundary for four. This meant that WI managed to get 20 runs off the last four deliveries of the over.
Pooran also piled the pressure on Rashid Khan, hitting the leg-spinner for three sixes and a boundary in the 18th over of the innings.
Pooran’s onslaught also saw West Indies claim the title of the highest ever score in the powerplay at the T20 World Cup. West Indies posted 92/1 in the first 6 overs on Tuesday, breaking Ireland’s record of 91/1 in the first overs during the 2014 World Cup.
Rovman Powell’s side eventually posted 218/5 from their allotted 20 overs, which proved to be too much for the Afghanistan batsmen. Afghanistan were bowled out for 114 as West Indies cruised to an easy 104-run victory.
