India’s pacers have been on fire in World Cup 2023. While Jasprit Bumrah has given them the opening bursts, Mohammed Shami has been sensational after having made to warm the benches in their first 4 matches. To add to the opposition’s headache, Mohammed Siraj, who looked a little out of sorts, found peak form with a fiery opening burst against Sri Lanka in Mumbai on Thursday.
India’s bowling masterclass peaked in front of a packed house in Mumbai. Jasprit Bumrah got Pathum Nissanka with a sensational outswinger in the first delivery of Sri Lanka’s chase. He became the first Indian to pick up a wicket in the first delivery of the innings in a World Cup match.
Mohammed Siraj, sharing the new ball, struck twice in his first over and bowled a ripper to Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis in his second over to pick up his 3rd wicket. Sri Lanka needed a good start if they were to stay in the contest in their chase of 358. Instead, they were reduced to 3 for 4.
There was no respite for the Sri Lankan batters as Mohammed Shami was the first-change bowler. He picked up 2 wickets in his first over and missed a hat-trick by a whisker. He finished with figures of 5 for 18, including a maiden in just 5 overs.
Sri Lanka lasted just 19.4 overs and managed just 55, weeks after they were bundled out for 50 by India in the Asia Cup final.
Words of praise came for the India fast bowlers from across the border too. Shoaib Akhtar took to social media to urge India cricket fans to celebrate their bowlers more.
Mohammed Amir took a cheeky dig at Pakistan’s World Cup 2023 bowling unit while praising the Indian attack.
Amir’s dig comes days after Hasan Ali responded to the dip in Pakistan pacers’ bowling attack in World Cup 2023, saying it was not the team that gave its bowlers the ‘best in the world tag’ but the rest of the world that rated their bowling attack highly.
“The first question you asked about being the best pace attack in the world – we have not called ourselves that – the world calls us the best,” he added.
Notably, Pakistan are fighting to stay alive in the semi-finals race with 3 wins in 7 matches. Shaheen Afridi seems to be finding his rhythm back while Mohammad Wasim Jr has been brilliant since coming into the team.
On the other hand, India have qualified for the semi-finals with 7 wins in as many matches.
