Australia registered a commanding victory over Bangladesh by 28 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis (DLS) method in a rain-affected Super Eights match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, North Sound, Antigua.

Dominant bowling performance

Opting to field first, Australia’s decision immediately paid dividends as they restricted Bangladesh to 140/8 in their allotted 20 overs. The standout performer was senior pacer Pat Cummins, who claimed the first hat-trick of the tournament with figures of 3/29. His ability to strike at crucial intervals dismantled Bangladesh’s middle order, setting the tone for Australia’s dominance. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa provided crucial support, picking up two wickets, while Bangladesh’s innings saw resilient knocks from skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (41) and Towhid Hridoy (40).

Impactful early strikes and Glenn Maxwell’s aggressive celebration

Australia’s dominance began right from the outset when Mitchell Starc struck early to dismiss Tanzid Hasan in the very first over. This early breakthrough set the tone for Bangladesh’s innings, as Australia’s bowlers capitalized on the conditions and maintained pressure throughout. After that, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Glenn Maxwell intensified Bangladesh’s woes by dismissing Rishad Hossain in the 10th over. Maxwell bowled a delivery outside off, luring Rishad to step out and attempt a big shot. However, Rishad only managed a leading edge, which was caught by Zampa at short third man. The standout moment was Maxwell’s reaction; as soon as he claimed Rishad Hossain’s wicket, he roared in celebration, showcasing his fierce determination and eagerness to excel for his team.

David Warner leads Australia’s successful chase

In response, Australia approached their chase aggressively, reaching 100 for two in just 11.2 overs before rain intervened. Opener David Warner led the charge with an unbeaten 53 off 35 balls, showcasing his class and intent. His innings provided Australia with a solid foundation, surpassing the DLS par score of 72 at the time of the interruption, which put them 28 runs ahead of Bangladesh’s projected score.
