Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan has revealed how the team was able to fulfill their promise to Brian Lara after the West Indies legend predicted that they would make it to the semi-finals. Afghanistan made it to the semi-finals for the first time in the World Cup on June 25, Tuesday, as they defeated Bangladesh in a thriller at St. Vincent.

Afghanistan had secured big wins in the tournament against New Zealand and Australia, and they knocked out the Aussies to make it to the final four stage after win at St. Vincent. Lara had predicted ahead of the tournament that Afghanistan would be in the final four and Rashid was happy to make the West Indies legend proud.

Rashid then went on to talk about Lara, who was the only person who had picked them as potential semi-finalists. The Afghan star revealed that at a welcome party he had a word with Lara and told him they would prove him right.

“I think the only guy who put us in the semifinal was Brian Lara. I think we proved that right. That’s what we have discussed before the competition in a welcome party. I told him we won’t let you down. We would make it., prove it that you are right. So I think that that’s something everyone is so proud and are proud of this team,” said Rashid.

Belief came after New Zealand win

Rashid said that the semi-final qualification feels like a dream for the team and the belief came in after their win against New Zealand.

“Well, it’s something like a dream for us as a team. Being in the semi-finals, I think, it’s all about the way we have started the thing, uh, the tournament. And, uh, the belief came while we beat New Zealand. So it’s unbelievable. I don’t have any words to describe my feelings. Definitely back home, everyone is so, so happy for this big achievement for us being in the semi-final,” said Rashid.
