Shubman Gill being sent back home because of disciplinary issues and strained relations with Rohit Sharma? Here’s the truth
[ad_1]
While everything has gone well for Team India in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024, recent rumors suggest that all is not well between captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.
The rumors started doing the rounds after reports stated that Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan would be sent home after the conclusion of India’s group-stage games in the tournament. Both the players are not in the main squad but were in the reserves along with Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed.
But while Rinku and Khaleel will stay with the team for the Super 8s as well, Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan will return home after the game against Canada in Florida on Saturday (June 15). As per a report in Cricbuzz, Gill and Avesh’s travels were only up to the US leg of India’s campaign in the T20 World Cup unless there were unexpected injuries.
Both the players accompanied the team to the USA as traveling reserves because it would not have been immediately possible for the BCCI to send in reinforcement from India in case of an injury. With Yashasvi Jaiswal being an extra opener in the squad and India likely to depend more on spinners in the Caribbeans, the BCCI has decided to send back both Gill and Avesh home.
As soon as this report came out, several news outlets stated that Gill is being sent home because of disciplinary reasons and having issues with captain Rohit Sharma. The reports added that the youngster has also unfollowed the Indian captain on Instagram.
Is everything not well between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill?:
It looks like the rumours of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill’s strained relationship are baseless. The Times of India’s Gaurav Gupta has called the reports ‘grossly incorrect’ and has insisted that the star batsman and Avesh are returning home only because India do not need their services for the time being.
“Reports of shubman Gill being sent home from US on disciplinary grounds are grossly incorrect, he and avesh khan are returning purely due to enough India players being there (including reserves),” Gupta wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Meanwhile, India have already booked their spot in the Super 8s after winning their first three group games. They will be playing their last group game against Canada before leaving for the Caribbeans for the next round.
