Shubman Gill as new Gujarat Titans captain was almost confirmed when Hardik Pandya left: Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra feels that it was almost confirmed that Shubman Gill would become the new captain of Gujarat Titans after Hardik Pandya had moved on to join Mumbai Indians.

Gill was named the captain of the Gujarat Titans for the IPL 2024 season. This significant development comes after Hardik’s departure to rejoin his former team, the Mumbai Indians.

Hardik rejoined MI on a blockbuster trade deal on November 27, as Cameron Green would head to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Gill’s ascendancy to leadership is a testament to his impressive performances and potential, having already made a mark in domestic and international cricket.

Gill’s consistent run-scoring prowess and maturity beyond his years have earned him accolades, including leading the run charts in the 2023 IPL season with 890 runs. As the new skipper, Gill is expected to bring his batting finesse and strategic acumen to the fore, guiding the Titans in their quest for continued success in the IPL.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Sportskeeda, Chopra said that a lot of fascinating and fantastic has been happening to Gill and it was almost confirmed that the star batter would takeover the captaincy reins once Hardik had left.

“Shubman Gill is the new Gujarat Titans captain. A lot of things have happened to him at 23 years of age, which is fascinating and fantastic. It was almost confirmed that Shubman would become the captain as soon as Hardik left,” said Chopra.

Chopra also said that Kane Williamson wouldn’t have been the ideal choice to lead as he had dropped himself a couple of times during his tenure with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“There was a school of thought about whether Kane Williamson should be made the captain. You have an example of Hyderabad already. Kane is such a good person, he drops himself if he is not doing well,” said Chopra.
