Rahul Dravid In Talks To Mentor Lucknow Super Giants In IPL 2024: Reports
[ad_1]
Rahul Dravid, the former India head coach, is reportedly in discussions with the IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to potentially assume the role of mentor ahead of IPL 2024. However, this hinges on the outcome of his discussions with the BCCI following the conclusion of his tenure as India’s head coach post the ODI World Cup.
Dravid took charge as the head coach after the 2021 T20 World Cup for a two-year contract until this year’s World Cup, following persuasion from then-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and current Secretary Jay Shah. Despite India not clinching an ICC trophy under his guidance, they excelled in bilateral series and currently hold the No.1 ranking across all formats. While they won 10 consecutive matches in the World Cup, they fell short against Australia in the final.
The BCCI is set to meet with Dravid to discuss his future plans, but an extension seems unlikely as he desires more time with his family, which is challenging due to the rigorous schedule and travel commitments as India’s head coach, as per a Dainik Jagran report.
Australian Justin Langer Set To Coach LSG
LSG had previously aimed to bring Dravid on board but his commitment to Team India was his top priority. Now, if Dravid doesn’t continue as India’s head coach, a deal with LSG seems probable. LSG has seen changes in their coaching staff, parting ways with head coach Andy Flower. Justin Langer is set to coach the team, potentially alongside Dravid if negotiations progress positively.
Additionally, reports suggest Dravid is also in discussions with Rajasthan Royals, a team he played for and captained, for a mentoring role. However, LSG appears to be the frontrunner for Dravid’s potential mentorship.
Regarding India’s head coach position, should Dravid opt against an extension, VVS Laxman, the current head of the NCA (National Cricket Academy), emerges as a strong contender. Laxman’s familiarity with the NCA system positions him as a potential successor and he’s currently serving as the interim coach for the Indian side in the T20I series against Australia.
