Australian cricketer Marnus Labuschagne opened up about sledging he faced from the Indian players, including Virat Kohli, during the final of the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that the opposition team was trying to get into him but he couldn’t hear them because of the electric crowd of Ahmedabad.
Marnus Labuschagne played a pivotal role in Australia’s 6-wicket win over India in the final of the ICC World Cup 2023. The batter soaked in all the pressure when his side was left tottering at 47/3 in the chase of 241 runs. He played his role to perfection and also supported centurion Travis Head magnificently well.
India were all over Australia in the first phase of their chase. The crowd too supported them and got behind their team. When Marnus Labuschagne came to bat, Virat Kohli welcomed him with some aggression. The batter capped at him and quipped something before staring at him.
After that, Shreyas Iyer also had a go at him as he was heard saying something to Marnus Labuschagne. But the Australia batter kept his calm and looked unfazed by all the sledging and the crowd’s gestures. He kept batting with focus and won his team the game.
Marnus Labuschagne opened up about the same, saying that he couldn’t hear what Indian players told him in the game. He also talked about the atmosphere, saying that he was delighted to see fans getting involved in the game. Speaking in his latest newsletter My World Cup Final Wrap, he explained:
“It was so loud and the wave of momentum India had was immense. The Indian team were getting into me and all I could say back, and very truthfully at that, was ‘I actually can’t hear what you’re saying over the crowd’. On this bus ride to the ground, there were fans lining the streets from about 5km out. It was amazing to see the fans get behind the game like they did.”
Standing in the middle of a giant stadium with 130,000 fans in it who all went silent – Marnus Labuschagne on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s dismissal
Marnus Labuschagne further talked about the dismissal of Virat Kohli. He said that the entire stadium went silent after that and they as a team took in a moment for it. He also said that Rohit Sharma’s dismissal was massive in the context of the game and credited Glenn Maxwell and Travis Head for their effort. He added:
“Standing in the middle of a giant stadium with 130,000 fans in it who all went silent at this moment. We all just stood in the team huddle and took it in for a moment.
It was huge in the context of the game. For Maxi to throw it up like he did and tempt Rohit into the shot, and then Heady to take this grab. It was massive.”
Marnus Labuschagne will now be heading home and preparing for the Test series against Pakistan, beginning 14th December.
