IPL 2024: Brad Hogg explain why RCB’s signing of Cameron Green is a mistake

Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg has expressed his dissatisfaction with Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) decision to trade for Cameron Green from Mumbai Indians (MI).

Green, who had a productive season with MI in 2023, scoring 452 runs and taking six wickets in 16 matches was traded to RCB. The franchise acquired the Australian all-rounder for a substantial amount of 17.5 crores, a move that Hogg believes is questionable.

RCB’s controversial trade: Brad Hogg questions Cameron Green’s move

In a video on his Instagram profile, the ex-spinner stated that RCB might have been influenced by the fear of Green being expensive in the auction, leading them to make a hasty decision. Hogg criticized the choice, pointing out that RCB has already made significant investments in their bowling lineup and may now face budget constraints for securing quality bowlers. He suggested that Green might have been better suited to another franchise.

“Is he worth it? RCB, I am looking at their line-up. I think this is a poor choice. Nothing against Green’s talent. He was good for Mumbai Indians last year. But if you look at RCB’s list, they spend big on their batting line-up. They don’t have enough cash there to spend on enough quality bowlers. If you want to win the IPL, you need quality bowlers to defend totals and set the games up. I think this is a poor choice from RCB and Green could have been suitable at some other club,” Hogg said.

MI’s strategic move: Brad Hogg commends Mumbai Indians

Hogg also commended MI for effectively utilizing the trade, freeing up a substantial amount of 17.5 crores in their budget. The Mumbai-based franchise then invested 15 crores to bring back Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans (GT) and added an extra 2.5 crores to their kitty for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction.

“Mumbai Indians, they threw Cameron Green out there for a little bit of trade bait, trying to free up some cash to get Hardik Pandya into their squad. It worked a treat. RCB couldn’t resist. They swooped in there, not wanting Green to go back into the auction thinking they might have had a little bit more to pay for the all-rounder,” the Australian stalwart concluded.
