Kohli, who plays alongside Maxwell for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), lauded the Australian batter for putting on an absolute show.
The 35-year-old Kohli took to his Instagram story to praise Maxwell for the herculean knock. He wrote, “Only you could do this. Freak.”
Maxwell had a massive task in hand as Australia were once struggling at 91 for the loss of seven wickets in 18.3 overs. Maxwell had his fair share of luck as an LBW decision against him was overturned, after which Mujeeb Ur Rahman dropped a simple catch at short fine leg.
From there on, Maxwell did not look back and kept hitting balls out of the park. He stayed out on 201 runs off 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes. He also put on 202 runs for the eighth wicket with Pat Cummins, who lent Maxwell support with a patient knock under pressure.
Maxwell, who hit the second fastest double hundred in the history of ODIs, said that he had aspired to play an innings of such quality for a long time.
“I feel like I had those types of innings before where I was given the chance and I haven’t made the most of it, so to make the most of it is probably the most pleasing thing, to be not out with Patty at the end is something I am really proud of,” Maxwell said after the match.
As far as Kohli is concerned, he celebrated his 35th birthday by equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 hundreds in ODIs. Having scored over 500 runs with two hundreds, Kohli has been in stupendous form.
