Ex-India pacer David Johnson dies after falling from balcony; Jay Shah, others express condolences

Former India pacer David Johnson passed away on June 20 in a tragic incident after he fell from the balcony of his fourth-floor apartment in Bengaluru, reported Indian Express.

The 52-year-old pacer was rushed to the nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), expressed his condolences on X. He wrote, “Deepest condolences to family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contributions to the game will always be remembered.”

Legendary former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar too expressed his condolences. He took to X and wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing of my former teammate, David Johnson. He was full of life and never gave up on the field. My thoughts are with his friends and family.”

 

Former Indian legendary spin bowler Anil Kumble also took to X to express his sorrow. He wrote, “Saddened to hear the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon, Benny!”

Former Indian opener Virenra Sehwag also expressed his condolences. He took to X and wrote, “Very sad to hear about David Johnson’s passing. Condolences to his family. Om Shanti (Sic).”

Former Indian cricketer and IPL 2024 winner, Kolkata Knight Riders’ mentor Gautam Gambhir, shared his condolences as well. He wrote, “Saddened by the passing away of David Johnson. May god give strength to his family and loved ones.”

David Johnson’s career

David Johnson made his debut for India in 1996 against Australia in Delhi. He also toured South Africa and played in the first Test. Over the course of his brief international career, Johnson played in two tests and picked up three wickets.

In first-class cricket, David Johnson played 39 games and picked up 125 wickets at an average of 28.63 and a strike rate of 47.4. He also scored a century in first-class cricket.

Johnson picked 41 wickets in 33 List A games. Johnson’s last competitive appearance came in the Karnataka Premier League in 2015.
