South Africa-born Namibia’s bowling all-rounder David Wiese has announced that he will quit playing international cricket after the ICC T20 WC 2024.

David Wiese confirmed that Namibia’s clash against reigning World T20 champions England was his last outing for the nation. The cricketer, who has also represented the South African national team, is a renowned cricketing personality in the world and his retirement announcement marks the departure of another great cricketing figure.

It could well be a massive blow for the Namibian team, which is largely dependent upon David Wiese’s services. Wiese carries a wealth of experience with him, having played a lot of international as well as franchise-level cricket. The all-rounder is also a renowned name in India due to his stint with South Indian outfit Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

David Wiese claims this is the perfect time for him to retire

While speaking to media reporters recently, David Wiese admitted that he felt this was the ideal time for him to retire from the international circuit. He stated that he might not be ready for the T20 World Cup challenge when the next edition takes place in 2026 in India & Sri Lanka.

David Wiese will be 42 when the next T20 WC takes place and he admitted himself that there’s not much cricket left in him as he approaches the 40-year mark. Despite his aging self, Wiese feels that he still has a lot to achieve and a lot to contribute to the Namibian team.

“Yeah, yeah, for now. I mean, next year’s T20 World Cup is still two years away, I’m 39 years old now, so , in terms of international cricket, I don’t know if there’s much left in me. Obviously, I still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play,” Wiese told media reporters.

Born in Roodeport, David Wiese switched his National team from South Africa to Namibia in 2021 after signing a Kolpak contract. Since then, he has been monumental behind the Namibian side’s qualification in back-to-back T20 World Cups and it will be fair to say that he has become a cricketing cult in the nation.

Wiese claims his career could not have a better ending

David Wiese also said that his retirement could not have come at a better time than this as he bid farewell to the game after playing against a side like England. It seemed like the perfect time for him to call time on his career which started in 2013 at the international level.

“But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me personally with Namibia. I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time,” David Wiese’s announcement concluded.
