Australia will never walk over and let you win: Brandon McMullen glad with close game

Scotland’s Brandon McMullen lauded the Australian team for playing the brand of cricket which they are known for. Despite losing the contest, McMullen was happy with Scotland’s closely-contested game against Australia. Scotland suffered a heart-break as they fell short of qualifying from the Super 8 stage by margins. Australia registered a nervy win by 5 wickets against Scotland and aided England to reach the Super 8s. Had Scotland won against Australia, they would have scripted history to edge past England and reach the Super 8s.

The Scotland team fought like bravehearts as they put their hearts on their sleeves to challenge one of the best teams of the tournament. They managed to put 180 runs on the board and McMullen shone with the bat by scoring 60 runs in 34 balls. Scotland also managed to make early breakthroughs as Australia were reeling at 60 for 3.

Australia edge past Scotland

McMullen hailed the Australian team and said that they knew the Australian team would come all guns blazing despite having made it to the Super 8s.

“Not at all. I think Australia is a world-class cricket team. They have been for many, many years. They’re always going to put out a good fight, they’re never just going to walk over and let you win so I’m glad that it was a close game today,” McMullen said while addressing the post-match press-conference.

The pair of Travis Head and Marcus Stoinis added 80 runs to help Australia chase down the target of 182 runs.

However, McMullen also affirmed that Scotland has the capability to fight against one of the best teams in the world.

“We show that we can compete at this high level against the best players in the world and again yet again we showed tonight that no, we’re not far away from beating the best in the world,” McMullen added.

Scotland-so close, yet so far

McMullen expressed his disappointment after Scotland not being able to cross the final hurdle.

“Obviously, it’s hugely disappointing as a group we’ve played some real good cricket in this tournament so far and the belief was super high going into today’s game. We had a good start in the first half of the game and the first innings and we just couldn’t quite back it up in the bowling,”

“I thought we bowled well at times. The first half was especially really good. And then you had a few big overs in that back end, which let us down. So unfortunately, it wasn’t our day today, but I learned a lot from the game and the experience was incredible,” McMullen added.

England and Australia became the 2 teams from the Group B to reach the Super 8 stage.
