Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif heaped praise on Mohammed Shami and claimed that the pacer was India’s standout player during the World Cup 2023.
Shami delivered an extraordinary performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, held in India. Despite missing the first four matches of the tournament, Shami made a stunning comeback, stepping in for the injured all-rounder Hardik Pandya.

He showcased his experience and skill by claiming a five-wicket haul against New Zealand in Dharamsala, followed by a historic 7-57 in the semifinal against the same team in Mumbai. These figures marked the best ever by an Indian bowler in One Day Internationals.
Shami’s exceptional bowling helped him finish as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, with 24 wickets from seven matches. His average was an impressive 10.70, and he maintained a strike rate of 12.20. His achievements included three five-wicket hauls, contributing to his staggering strike-rate of 10.9, which was reported as the best in the tournament four days before the end of the World Cup.
As quoted by PTI, Latif said that Shami was India’s standout player in the World Cup.
“You look at the way he has come up and done so well. He was in my opinion the standout player for India in this World Cup.”
Speaking about India’s loss in the final, Latif felt that it could have been a psychological thing. The former Pakistan skipper said that the current Indian team was worthy of winning the World Cup final and also went on tLatio praise the Australian team for their mental toughness.
“Maybe it is just a psychological thing with the Indian players. This team was worthy of winning the World Cup final but all credit to the Australians for showing once again how mentally tough and organised they are in their sports,” Latif said.
