PCB announces appointment of a new chief selector for the men’s national cricket team

In the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing exit from the ODI World Cup 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) seems to be on a mission to reshape the country’s cricketing leadership. The latest development in this ongoing overhaul is the appointment of a new chief selector for the national men’s selection committee.

Inzamam-ul-Haq’s exit sparks changes

Former chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq recently stepped down from his position amid allegations of a conflict of interest with the board. This move came after Pakistan’s lackluster performance in the ODI World Cup, prompting the PCB to make substantial changes to the coaching staff.

Coaching staff shakeup

Following the World Cup debacle, PCB removed director Mickey Arthur, head coach Grant Bradburn, and batting coach Andrew Puttick. In their place, former cricketer Mohammad Hafeez was appointed as the director and head coach for the upcoming tours of Australia and New Zealand.

A former fast bowler takes the helm

The latest addition to the revamped leadership is Wahab Riaz, who has been named the chief selector of the national men’s selection committee. The 38-year-old has a notable international career, having played 27 Tests, 91 ODIs, and 36 T20Is for Pakistan, with his most recent appearance for the national side in December 2020. Riaz, who had announced his retirement from international cricket in August, expressed his excitement upon getting the new responsibility.

“I am honored to assume the role of chairperson for the national men’s selection committee, and I extend my gratitude to Chairman PCB Management Committee, Mr. Zaka Ashraf, for entrusting me with this responsibility. The decision to involve former players in cricketing matters is commendable, and I am willing to work for the betterment of Pakistan cricket,” said Riaz in a statement.

Riaz’s first assignment in his new role will be the upcoming tour of Australia, where Pakistan are scheduled to play three Tests. Subsequently, the team travel New Zealand for the five-match T20I series.
