Perhaps the most heartbreaking defeat to Australia in an ODI World Cup, came in the finals of the 2003 edition of the tournament in South Africa. India had won eight matches in a row under Sourav Ganguly, a record streak which was broken only in 2023 by the team under Rohit Sharma. However, they lost to Australia twice in the tournament, once in the group stage and once in the summit clash. Australia absolutely bossed the final, making 359/2 in 50 overs with captain Ricky Ponting scoring 140 off 121.
