Former cricketers Aakash Chopra and Virender Sehwag slammed Pakistan cricket for using Naseem Shah’s absence as an excuse for the team’s underwhelming performance in World Cup 2023.

The Men in Green started their campaign with wins over the Netherlands and Sri Lanka. However, three losses on the trot against India, Australia and Afghanistan have put their campaign in shambles.

On Monday, Pakistan lost to Hashmatullah Shahidi’s Afghanistan by eight wickets at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Chopra said that Pakistan fans need to ask PCB questions after the Men in Green’s poor showing since the Asia Cup 2023. Sehwag, on the other hand, criticised Pakistan for not working on their shortcomings.

Chopra took to X and wrote, “Naseem Shah is a damn good bowler. No doubt about it. But using his absence as an excuse for losing three matches in a row is a cop-out. People from Pakistan on this platform need to ask questions to the PCB instead. Finished fourth in the Asia Cup. Now, the World Cup. How did it come to this??”

Sehwag wrote, “Pakistan is an unpredictable side but the way they have been making lame excuses for their earlier defeats, this was certainly on the cards. Just did not focus on their many weaknesses. What a proud day for Afghanistan came close many times, but today crossed the line.”

Naseem was ruled out of the World Cup after he sustained a shoulder injury in the Asia Cup Super Four match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Recently, the pacer underwent shoulder surgery.

In World Cup 2023, Pakistan are placed fifth in the table with four points and a net run rate of -0.400 thanks to wins in two out of five matches. Their next match is against South Africa on Friday, October 27 at the Chepauk.
