World Cup 2023 Niggle Forces Marcus Stoinis To Miss Australia’s World Cup 2023 Clash Against Netherlands

[ad_1]

In the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, all-rounder Cameron Green has been brought into Australia’s playing XI to replace Marcus Stoinis for their match against the Netherlands on Wednesday, October 25, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

During the toss, Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins mentioned that Stoinis had a “minor calf niggle.” Green had previously played in Australia’s opening match against India, led by Rohit Sharma, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai before being dropped.

There had been discussions about Travis Head’s potential return to the team after recovering from a hand injury he suffered during Australia’s tour of South Africa ahead of the ongoing World Cup 2023. However, Head was not selected to play in this match as he needed “a few more days” to be fully fit, according to Cummins.

Australia didn’t have the best of starts in the World Cup 2023, losing to India and South Africa, but wins against Pakistan and Sri Lanka have put them in a favourable position but they need to win most of their remaining encounters to secure a place in the semi-finals. They currently occupy the fourth spot in the points table with four points and a net run rate of -0.193.

In contrast, the Netherlands made no changes to their playing XI against Australia. They secured a 38-run victory over South Africa at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala but lost to Sri Lanka by five wickets at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Led by Scott Edwards, the Netherlands are currently in sixth place with two points, and a victory against Australia could potentially propel them into the top four.

Australia and the Netherlands have only met twice in World Cup history, in 2003 and 2007 in Potchefstroom and St Kitts, respectively.

Regarding today’s match, Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first on what seems to be another pitch favourable to batsmen at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Netherlands, after being asked to bowl first, faced a tough challenge early on, conceding 27 runs in the first 3 overs. However, they managed to take the wicket of the dangerous-looking Mitchell Marsh, thanks to Logan van Beek’s bowling.
