The third match of the Aaron Jones-led United States of America National Cricket Team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 was against the Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team on Wednesday, June 12, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
The USA National Cricket Team headed into the clash with India National Cricket Team for the first time in cricket history on the back of consecutive wins over Canada and former World Champions Pakistan.
In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener, the USA thrashed Canada by 7 wickets at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on June 1. The bowlers weren’t able to do a good job in the match and they ended up leaking 194 runs. Chasing the target, things looked a little tough for the USA after they were reduced to 2-42. However, Aaron Jones (94* off 40) and Andries Gous (65 off 46) played stellar innings to take the USA past the finish line in 17.4 overs.
USA’s second match was against Pakistan and it was an absolutely thrilling encounter. Pakistan entered the match as firm favourites to win but a poor performance from them and a great performance from USA made the clash an absolute nail-biter.
With the bat, Pakistan were really timid and they posted 159/7 on the board. Nosthush Kenjige picked three wickets for his side while Saurabh Netravalkar bagged two wickets. Chasing the target, USA batters took Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah to the cleaners but they lost some momentum in the end overs and managed to just level the scores to take the game into Super Over. In the Super Over, the USA did a good job and pulled off a massive upset by beating Pakistan.
10-15 runs short. If we got 130 then it would have been a tough total – Aaron Jones
Talking about the IND vs USA clash, the United States of America were invited to bat first in the match and they managed to post a modest total of 110/8 on the board.
With the ball, Saurabh Netravalkar cleaned up Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in his first two overs, and Rishabh Pant was also dismissed early. However, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube batted extremely well and their 72-run partnership took the game away from USA and India won by 7 wickets.
Speaking after the match, USA stand-in captain Aaron Jones said that they were just 10-15 runs short in the match, and had they got to 130 they would have pulled off the biggest upset in the history of cricket. He said:
“10-15 runs short. If we got 130 then it would have been a tough total, that’s how it goes sometimes. The boys were very disciplined and really proud of the bowling unit. Feels good, this is what we wanted for USA cricket, enjoying it. We will recalibrate now, have a few meetings and come back strong.”
Aaron Jones added that the pitch was a tricky one and it provided assistance to pacers, which is why he avoided using spinners. He also gave an update on USA captain Monank Patel, who missed out on the match due to a niggle. Aaron Jones asserted:
“The wicket was a bit tricky, more suited for seam bowling. That’s why no spin. Mostly he (Monank Patel) should be fit for the last game, just got a slight niggle.”
The next match of the United States of America National Cricket Team is against the Ireland National Cricket Team on Friday, June 14, at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill.
