Former England skipper Eoin Morgan opened up about the speculations of replacing Matthew Mott as the white-ball coach of the team after the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that talks are not good at the moment and he’s not looking at a coaching job because he’s happy enjoying time with his family.
England are having the worst possible campaign in the ICC World Cup 2023. They have lost 5 games out of their 6 and are reeling at the bottom of the points table. The Jos Buttler-led side is out of contention for the semi-finals but their poor performances have also put their qualification for Champions Trophy 2025 in jeopardy.
To qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025, England need to finish in the top 7 of the ongoing World Cup. With the way they performing, it’s fair to say that it looks quite difficult for them. The defending champions have batted and bowled poorly and they have struggled a lot in the tournament.
Following the poor performances, there have been many speculations that Matthew Mott will be replaced as the head coach of the team. There have been rumors that Eoin Morgan is in contention to take over the head coach job and become the new white-ball coach of the team.
But Eoin Morgan himself rubbished off the rumors, saying that it’s far-fetched talk but he’s happy with what he’s doing now. He also talked about England’s poor performances in the tournament, saying that nobody in the dressing room can answer that.
Eoin Morgan believes that changing the captain and coach is not a good idea as England isn’t a bad team by any stretch. Speaking to Sky Sports, he explained:
“Yeah, it’s a bit far-fetched (coaching role speculations). But everybody is entitled to interpret my comments. I was very clear in what I thought might be a cause to the performances that the England team have produced in the World Cup. Simply the factors that contributed to it, nobody in the change room, neither the captain nor the coach can explain the situation that they find themselves in.
“I am very happy and cemented hopefully in what I am going to do for the future. I spend a lot of time at home now with my family, which is great, I love watching on. I actually think the talk of replacing the captain and coach is not a good idea at the moment simply because of the high turnover of the World Cups. They are double world champions for a reason, they are not a bad team by any stretch.”
ENG vs AUS: Matthew Mott is going through the biggest challenge of his England coaching career – Eoin Morgan
Eoin Morgan further pointed out that England coach Matthew Mott is facing the biggest challenge but he should be given time. He added that if defending champions won’t qualify for the Champions Trophy then the selector and board members will be under scanner. He explained;
“Matthew Mott is going through the biggest challenge of his England coaching career at the moment, it’s one that he should be given time to put right, certainly toward the next year.
“But if the England team doesn’t qualify for the Champions Trophy, the likes of Rob Key and the board will come under increasing pressure, surrounding his job.”
England will be next seen in action when they take on Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023. The two arch-rivals will take on each other on Saturday (4th November) in Ahmedabad.
