The search for the new head coach of the Indian men’s national cricket team by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has entered a heightened phase. As Rahul Dravid‘s tenure approaches its conclusion after the T20 World Cup 2024, numerous contenders have emerged for the coveted position.

Among them are esteemed figures such as Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, Stephen Fleming, and even Andy Flower. Additionally, former South African captain AB de Villiers has expressed interest in the coaching role when asked about the possibility of succeeding Dravid, acknowledging the excitement it holds for him.

AB de Villiers shares his perspective

De Villiers shared his perspective, expressing his anticipation of deriving satisfaction from coaching despite not having a concrete strategy in place. The accomplished right-handed batter also admitted that while certain aspects of coaching might pose challenges initially, he remains receptive to learning and evolving to meet them.

“I absolutely have no idea. I do think I’ll enjoy coaching. I think there are certain elements I won’t enjoy as much, which I will have to learn. With time, anything is possible and I can think on my feet and learn as I move on,” De Villiers said on News18.

Performance of Team India under Rahul Dravid’s coaching

Following his appointment as Team India’s head coach post the T20 World Cup 2021, Dravid embarked on a mission to enhance the team’s performance. Remarkably, during his tenure, India achieved significant milestones, including reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the final of the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC), and the final of the ODI World Cup 2023. Moreover, they clinched victory in the Asia Cup 2023. Although Team India fell short of securing an ICC trophy, they exhibited a level of professionalism and skill under Dravid’s coaching and the leadership of Rohit Sharma.
